Marriage as Priority and Friendship
Marriage is many things. Marriage is glorious. Marriage is hard. It’s blood, sweat and tears. It’s defeats, and it’s victories. It’s almost everything except sweet. We’re going to see the Bible’s view of marriage is completely realistic.
The topic we now come to is the purpose of marriage. We’ve looked at the power and the definition, the priority of marriage. What’s the purpose of it? The purpose of marriage is friendship, companionship. Your spouse has to be your best friend.
This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 8, 1991. Series "Marriage". Scripture: Ephesians 5:22-33.

@rebeccafujioka : He came home tired, and more often than not put off the critical conversations that we should have had from the beginning. I looked toward our retirement years with the hope that then, we would get a second chance, time to talk and get the marriage straightened out. And we had a good marriage in many respects. However, the year of my retirement he became seriously ill with an autoimmune disease: how ill I didn’t realize until he died five years later. I never got that second chance.

Both my husband and I became Christians after marriage; we both started late in our understanding of how to apply the Word to our lives. I wish there had been people with a depth of experience who could have counseled us. Very quickly my husband’s career took priority: we moved every one to three years, and every move brought new crises. He was sent as a troubleshooter to problem operations.
