One Way or Many?

Jesus Christ was a teacher who walked around and told people to love each other. He was kind to the poor. He laid his hands on the sick. He fed the hungry. He did all these things. But there have been lots of people who have done good things like this and that have told us, “Let’s just love each other.” So why did this one teacher become the most influential single figure in the history of the world?
It’s not because of the uncontroversial things, but it’s because of the controversial ones. Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). It’s this kind of claim that makes all the difference. No Jewish person could possibly ever say he was God. It would be inconceivable — and definitely controversial. Let’s look more deeply at the nature of this claim and then the uniqueness of the claim.

Salvation: Merit or Mercy?
Wednesday Aug 04, 2021
Wednesday Aug 04, 2021
George Gallup recently released a poll that asked Americans what would be the biggest issues they faced when they died. The poll showed that 42 percent (or almost half) of Americans said one of the things they were very concerned about was whether God would forgive them or not. Let’s face it, we all need mercy.
The good news is that the kingdom of God runs completely on mercy – not merit. How does this work? How does the mercy of God come to us? Today’s passage tells us the mercy of God comes to us in three forms and in three ways: as a call, as a covering, and as a feast.

Bible: End or Means?
Monday Aug 02, 2021
Monday Aug 02, 2021
If you read through the gospel stories, one of the things that strikes you almost immediately is how often Jesus Christ debated with those around him — not only how often he came into debates but how often he started them too. Today’s message comes from a series on some of these great debates when Jesus was on earth.
We’re looking at a passage in which Jesus is arguing about Scripture. He’s going to teach us about the Bible through a debate — surprisingly, a debate with diligent Bible students. He comes up to the most astute Bible students, and he says they are as dead wrong as people who don’t believe in the Bible at all. They are as deaf to what God is saying as people who are absolutely skeptical about the nature of the Bible. We learn four things: 1) God speaks to us; 2) how God speaks to us; 3) why we don’t hear what God speaks to us; and 4) how we can hear it.
This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 30, 1997. Series: Christ the Controversialist - Confrontations With Jesus. Scripture: John 5:31-47.

Forward-Back Living
Friday Jul 30, 2021
Friday Jul 30, 2021
Today’s teaching is the last part of a series on the life of Jesus in the gospel of Luke. When you believe in Jesus it doesn’t just give you some kind of inner peace, but it completely changes your life. Jesus rearranges our lives upside down — he changes our attitude to our wealth and recognition and power. Jesus rearranges our lives inside out — he satisfies our need to get approval. He gives us self-esteem, worth, honor and dignity.
Now we’re going to see one more way in which Jesus rearranges your life through the kingdom of God. He doesn’t just have you live upside down and inside out, but also forward back. What does that mean? Let’s take a look and see what he teaches us about 1) the power of the kingdom; 2) the practices of the kingdom; and 3) the provision of the kingdom.

Inside-Out Living

Wednesday Jul 28, 2021
In today’s passage from the Gospel of Luke, we’re taking a look at a parable which shows us a problem that everybody faces in life – it’s universal in scope. This is the problem of righteousness.
There are two ways to deal with this problem. The parable introduces us to two guys, each of whom represents a particular solution to the problem. One works (the inside-out approach) and one does not (the outside-in approach).

Upside-Down Living

Many of you have heard the term “kingdom of God,” but can you put in a nutshell what it is? Dallas Willard, a philosopher at the University of Southern California, says a kingdom is the “range of your effective will.” If somebody gets into your bag and takes something out, you’ll be outraged. Why? There has been an intrusion on your territory — or your kingdom. There has been a violation of the range of your effective will.
What does it mean, then, to put yourself within the range of God’s effective will? It means that you get a lasting identity that goes on for eternity, and it is marked by astounding liberality. Let’s look more closely at how we can get that kind of identity.

Responding to Jesus
Friday Jul 23, 2021
Friday Jul 23, 2021
Today’s sermon comes from a series on the life of Jesus in the gospel of Luke. Luke gives us a detailed portrait of Jesus, who he is and what he has done. Even though people saw Jesus in person, some of them didn’t get it — they didn’t understand. We have all of this information about Jesus, but how do make sense of it? How do you respond to him?
Everything you need to respond to Jesus in a life-transforming way is right here in Luke 23. We see all of the people rejecting him — both the leaders and the common people, the Jews and the Gentiles. This is everybody. We’re going to study four groups who rejected Jesus and then highlight three things: who gets Jesus, how they get Jesus, and how we can do the same.
This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on April 27, 2003. Series: "The Meaning of Jesus Part 4; The Kingdom of God." Scripture: Luke 23:33-56.

Doubt, Joy and Power
Wednesday Jul 21, 2021
Wednesday Jul 21, 2021
Today’s sermon comes from a series on the life of Jesus in the gospel of Luke. We come to the end of the book that describes multiple scenes of Jesus interacting with different groups of people after his death, burial, and resurrection. Specifically in Luke 24:36-49, he appears to his disciples and helps them understand the meaning of the events that had happened.
Jesus does four things in this passage that change the lives of his disciples forever, and because he’s the risen Jesus, he can do the very same things to us right now. 1) He answers the doubts of their minds; 2) he satisfies the needs of their hearts by eating with them; 3) he reforges the direction of their lives by sending them, and 3) he shows them his hand and his feet.

The Hour of Darkness
Monday Jul 19, 2021
Monday Jul 19, 2021
Today’s passage comes from Luke and it describes the night in which Jesus was betrayed. There is a theme to this passage: darkness and night. When the authorities come to take Jesus away, he tells them in verse 53 “this is your hour — when darkness reigns.” It could be translated as “this the hour of the authority of darkness.” The physical darkness is a representation of something deeper that happens.
There’s a darkness that blinds the eyes, and then there’s another kind of darkness that blinds the heart and the mind and the soul. It’s a spiritual darkness. Jesus has come to redeem us from this darkness. There are three incidents that we’re going to look at; the first two tell us about our condition and the third tells us what Jesus has come to do about it. First, the soldiers reject him; then, the disciples reject him; and lastly, the Father rejects him. These are necessary for Jesus to do the redeeming work that he was sent to do.

The Upper Room
Friday Jul 16, 2021
Friday Jul 16, 2021
One of the great questions of history is, “Why in the world did the early Christians adopt the cross as their main symbol?” Do you realize why that is so odd? On the cross, Jesus died at age 33 in agony, abandoned by everyone in his life. All the other founders of religions died old and “successful.” For example, Buddha lived to be 80 years old and achieved enlightenment. And Muhammad lived into his 60s during which he united all of Arabia under one faith. There is a vivid contrast with the picture of Jesus. Why in the world would anyone look at Jesus dying on a cross and say, “That’s the life I want to live. That’s the one I want to follow. That’s the faith for me”?
On the night before he died, Jesus gave his disciples the explanation of the meaning of his death in the upper room. When it was all over, they remembered it and they accepted it. It changed them. If you see what Jesus says to them and you take it in, it will change you too. There are four things which are life-changing about Jesus’ death: 1) it is the center of history; 2) it is the foundation for a radically new, profoundly different community; 3) it is the solution to the great mystery; and 4) it is appropriated personally.
This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on April 6, 2003. Series: "The Meaning of Jesus Part 3; Seeing Him." Scripture: Luke 22:14-34; Deuteronomy 26:5-9; Deuteronomy 16:3; Luke 2.

Today’s sermon comes from a series on the life of Jesus described in the gospel of Luke. The first part of the gospel (the first nine chapters) has to do mainly with the question, “Who is this Jesus?” The second part of the gospel of Luke (the nine chapters in the middle) addresses the question, “What does it mean to follow Jesus?” Now we’re going to look at a passage from the last part of Luke which gives us an existential encounter with Jesus.
In Luke 19, the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem marks the beginning of the last week of Jesus’ life. The central theme here is that Jesus is king. We’re going to look at four ways that he reigns: the real king, the transformational king, the paradoxical King, and the confrontational King.

Work and Rest
Monday Jul 12, 2021
Monday Jul 12, 2021
Today’s sermon comes from a series on the life of Jesus described in the gospel of Luke. Luke gives us many of Jesus’ teachings on what it means to be a disciple. In short, a disciple is one who applies the gospel to absolutely every single area of life.
In today’s passage from Luke 6, we learn about Sabbath rest. God gives us rest from our labors – it is a gift and a blessing. It is a way of keeping us healthy and protecting us from being overwhelmed by our work. God himself modeled it for us when creating the universe. Let’s look at it more closely: Why do we need it? Where do we get it? How do we do it?

Forgiveness
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Today’s sermon comes from a series on the life of Jesus described in the gospel of Luke. As Jesus is on the road to Jerusalem described in the middle of Luke, Jesus gives us instruction for how to be a disciple. In today’s passage in Luke 17, Jesus teaches us that being a disciple means living a life of habitual, perpetual forgiveness. It means having a forgiving spirit.
Jesus’ teaching is so startling that his hearers respond with “increase our faith.” They are saying, “You haven’t given us enough faith to do this.” But Jesus says yes I have. There are three questions for today: Why do we need a forgiving spirit? What is it? And how do we get it?

Wednesday Jul 07, 2021
Today’s sermon comes from a series on the life of Jesus described in the gospel of Luke. Jesus says in today’s passage that his disciples should have a particular regard for money and possessions. In other words, coming into a relationship with Jesus will change how one sees the world, including money and possessions.
Jesus says, “Watch out for greed.” Greed is a money sickness that can take over one’s life — it’s like a spiritual cancer. It’s something money causes, but it doesn’t necessarily have to come from money. It can take over someone who is wealthy or poor. There are three headings under which we will learn about this sickness: how to beware of money blindness, understand the nature of money sickness, and how to acquire money wellness.

Monday Jul 05, 2021
Today’s sermon comes from a series on the life of Jesus described in the gospel of Luke. The passage comes from chapters 10 and 13 which help us answer the question, “What does it mean to be his disciple” In verse 39 we learn that Mary sat at the Lord’s feet which is the technical way of saying that she was a disciple of a rabbi. Now historians will tell us it was extremely rare for a rabbi at that time to take a woman as a formal disciple, but Jesus does it. From a modern point of view, here’s a woman being told, “Send her back into the kitchen; she has no place at your feet as a disciple,” and Jesus says, “Yes, she does.”
Through Mary we learn something for all of us. Disciples are called into an extraordinarily personal relationship with Jesus. Let’s look more closely at these two questions: What is that extraordinary personal relationship, and secondly, how can we cultivate it?

Today’s sermon comes from a series on the life of Jesus described in the gospel of Luke. The passage comes from the second half of chapter 10 which helps us answer the question, “What does it mean to be his disciple?”
The first part of chapter 10 says all disciples are given the gospel as a message which is to be communicated to everyone. In this last part of the chapter, we’re given the other side of being a disciple; instead of just being called messengers, we’re also called to be neighbors. We’re called to meet the needs of all the people around us, whether they believe the message or not. There are four things we learn: 1) it is required, 2) it has magnitude, 3) the motivation for doing it, and 4) how to do it.

Messengers
Wednesday Jun 30, 2021
Wednesday Jun 30, 2021
The first nine chapters of Luke are mainly concerned with the question, “Who is Jesus?” Starting in chapter 9 and stretching over the next few chapters, the theme switches, as it were, and asks, “If he’s the Son of God, how should we live?”
The general answer is that we should be disciples, but there are many facets to being a disciple. Starting in chapter 10, Jesus gives us specific ways we are to be his disciples. Today we’re going to look more specifically at being a messenger. Disciples are messengers. Every disciple of Jesus is given a message to publicly communicate, urging everyone to believe it. There are three things Jesus gives every single disciple: a mission, a message, and a motivation.

What is Truth? An Open Forum
Monday Jun 28, 2021
Monday Jun 28, 2021
“What is truth?” is the famous question Pilate asks Jesus before the crucifixion. Did he sincerely believe that truth was something that could be grasped or was he a skeptic that doubted the existence of truth? “We must understand Pilate to understand ourselves, for he may have represented the very modern view that truth is after all a relative and subjective affair, an agreed-upon convention, a matter of expedience — and that therefore we are justified in doing anything that seems expedient, even as Pilate” (Joy Davidman, Smoke on the Mountain).
The Gallup poll reports 66 percent of Americans say there is no such thing as absolute truth, but historic Christianity says there is — moral absolutes, absolute truths, truths about God and eternal things that everybody and every culture needs to bow to and submit to. Let’s look at it more closely under these three headings: 1) how we deny truth, 2) why we deny it, and 3) how we use it anyway (that you can’t avoid living your life as if there is absolute truth).
This open forum with Dr. Timothy Keller took place at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on March 5, 1995. Series: "Redeemer Open Forums".

The End of History
Friday Jun 25, 2021
Friday Jun 25, 2021
The Apostles’ Creed is one of the oldest summaries of the basic beliefs of Christianity. Today’s sermon comes from a series that follows the outline of the Creed, wherein it says, “I believe in the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.”
Ancient cultures and philosophies and religions all believed that history was cyclical and that it wasn’t going anywhere. However, the very idea that history is making progress and that we’re moving toward an end goal comes from the Bible. We’re going to look more closely at the original readers of today’s passage from Revelation: 1) the hope they needed, 2) the hope they got, and 3) how you and I can take hold of that hope ourselves.

The Church
Wednesday Jun 23, 2021
Wednesday Jun 23, 2021
The Apostles’ Creed is one of the oldest summaries of the basic beliefs of Chrsitianity. Today’s sermon on the church comes from a series that follows the outline of the Creed. As Christians we believe in the importance of the church that was established by Jesus Christ 2,000 years ago.
We’ve chosen a passage from Ephesians 2 that gives us one very important truth about the church that is very relevant for our world in which there is so much disunity. Here it is, the members of the church get both the resources and the power to get along with people who are radically different than themselves. There are three things that we will highlight in this passage: 1) the gospel creates a supernatural community; 2) this is through spiritual heart surgery; and 3) this results in a radical new identity.
