Proverbs does not talk nearly so much about how to make right decisions as to how to become the kind of person who makes right decisions. We now come to self-control. A man or a woman without self-control is not going to live a wise life, not going to make wise choices, and is going to mess up their lives and the lives of people around them.
What do we learn from these passages in Proverbs about self-control? Three things. We learn the problem of self-control. We learn something about the principle of self-control. Then, last of all, we learn the practice of self-control, how we do it.
This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 28, 2004. Series "Proverbs: True Wisdom for Living". Scripture: Proverbs 18:10; 23:19-21; 25:28; Titus 2:11-14.

Sluggardliness
Wednesday Jul 24, 2019
Wednesday Jul 24, 2019
A theme that anybody who reads the book of Proverbs through will see come up again and again is the subject of work. It talks positively about work under the heading of “diligence.” It talks negatively about work under the heading of “sluggard” or “the sluggardliness.” We live in a city where there’s probably more pressure on work—fewer boundaries to it, and less stability in it—than anywhere I know.
The book of Proverbs tells us if you want to have a fulfilled human life, you have to do four things with your work. If you want to have a fulfilled human life, you have to do your work, love your work, re-narrate your work, and redeem your work.
This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 21, 2004. Series "Proverbs: True Wisdom for Living". Scripture: Proverbs 8:1-4; 10:4-5; 12:10-11; 15:19; 22:29; 27:18.

Haughty Eyes

Over and over and over again, the Bible, and especially Proverbs, says, “If you think you’re wise, you’re a fool; but if you are painfully aware of all of your foolishness, you are wise—or at least you’re on your way to becoming wise.” Chapter 16:19 says, “Better to be lowly in spirit and among the [poor] than to share plunder with the proud.”
Humility is more valuable than all the gold, silver and jewels that lay beneath the earth. So we’re going to learn three things by looking at these texts. We’re going to learn the diagnosis of pride, what it is; the destructiveness of pride, what it does; and the antidote for pride.
This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 14, 2004. Series "Proverbs: True Wisdom for Living". Scripture: Proverbs 11:2,12; 13:10; 15:25,33; 16:18-19; 21:4; 28:26.

The Evil of Envy
Friday Jul 19, 2019
Friday Jul 19, 2019
The book of Proverbs has been showing us that very basic to the development of wisdom is the ability to understand and redirect the deep currents of our hearts. We now come to a theme the Bible talks about as being very important to understand—both the reality of it and the power of it—and that is envy. I’d like us to notice three things: how to understand envy, why to deal with envy, and where to take your envy.
This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 7, 2004. Series "Proverbs: True Wisdom for Living". Scripture: Proverbs 23:17-18; Psalm 73:1-3, 20-26.

Wisdom is knowing the right thing to do in the great majority of life situations the moral rules don’t address. One of the areas where you will have a mess of a life if you only follow the rules and don’t have wisdom is the area of money.
People who only look to the rules in the area of money are going to be destructively unwise in their lives. According to the book of Proverbs, if you want to be wise in the area of money, finances, wealth and possessions, you need to know three things. You need to know the power of money, the reasons for the power of money, and how to break the power of money and properly use it in your life.
This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 31, 2004. Series "Proverbs: True Wisdom for Living". Scripture: Proverbs 10:15-16; 11:1,4,24,26; 13:21,23; 30:8b-9.

The Temptation of Beauty
Monday Jul 15, 2019

Solomon asks for wisdom. He asks for “a heart that can discern right from wrong.” The question comes up, “If he’s the king of Israel, he has the law of God. Why would he need a heart to discern right from wrong? Doesn’t the Word of God tell you?” The answer is wisdom is not less than being moral and good, but it’s quite a bit more. It’s knowing the right decision to make, the right course of action to take, in the vast majority of life situations the moral rules don’t address.
In today's passage, we’ll see that in order to be wise, we have to learn how to understand and manage the power of sexuality. If we’re going to be wise with regard to sex, we have to know three things. First of all, why and how we tend to undervalue sex. Secondly, why and how we tend, at the same time, to overvalue sex, and how we can solve that.

Ruth is a story of redeemers. Ruth teaches us that friendships can change the world (as with Boaz, the kinsman-redeemer), and that we can and must reach across spiritual and cultural barriers to do so (as with Ruth, the hidden redeemer). Both Boaz and Ruth point to Jesus, our true Redeemer. Once we realize that, we can ourselves reach across barriers to engage in spiritual friendships and be true disciples of Jesus. The Word Made Flesh
Thursday Dec 08, 2016
Thursday Dec 08, 2016
John's Gospel begins by teaching that Jesus Christ is the Word of God. Just as we come to know a person through speaking to them and listening to their words, we come to know God by listening to Jesus speak to us. Yet, Jesus did not come solely to speak. He came to live among us so that there is nothing we will suffer that He has not also suffered. But most of all, He came to die for us. In the incarnation, God became vulnerable to us - even to death - and yet He loved us so much that He was glad to so. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 13, 2009. Series "Christmas 2009". Scripture: John 1:1-14; Hebrews 2:14-18; Mark 2:5

Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on May 31, 2009. Series "Living by Faith in Troubled Times". Scripture: Habakkuk 3, Matthew 6, Luke 19

Nebuchadnezzar's pride began in contentment and prosperity, but he had no peace of mind. It caused him to take credit for everything he'd achieved. God dehumanized him in a reflection of what pride had done to his heart. Only when he recognized his debt to God - and that he was the object of God's mercy - could he be humbled and healed of his pride. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on February 5, 1995. Series "The Seven Deadly Sins". Scripture: Daniel 4:24-37; Isaiah 52

Rejecting the Real Jesus
Thursday Jun 16, 2016
Thursday Jun 16, 2016
Why do so many people disbelieve Christianity and reject the message of Jesus Christ? The underlying problem is that we do not want to give up control over our lives and have God be our ultimate authority. To overcome unbelief we must see our need for a Savior and look to Jesus Christ, the wisdom of God, who died for us on the cross. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 22, 1996. Series "The Real Jesus Part 1; His Teaching". Scripture: Matthew 11:16-24

The Final Hour
Thursday Jun 02, 2016
Thursday Jun 02, 2016
The cross solves many of our deepest human dilemmas. We wonder how there can be a God when there is so much injustice in the world, yet of all the world's religions, only Christianity has a God who comes down and suffers injustice alongside us. We wonder how we can ever truly please a perfectly holy God, but on the cross, Jesus satisfies the holiness of God for us. The temple curtain is torn, and we are welcomed inside as God's children. This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on April 16, 2000. Series "St. Matthew's Passion; The World's Last Night". Scripture: Matthew 27:45-56; Psalm 22
